Girolamo d'Andrea (born April 12, 1812 in Naples , † May 14, 1868 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal .

Life

Girolamo d'Andrea came from the family of the Marchesi d'Andrea from Naples. He was educated at the Collège La Fleche in France , then entered the clergy and was ordained priest in 1835 . As early as 1841 he was ordained a bishop and named titular archbishop of Mytilene in partibus infidelium . The Pope sent him to Switzerland in 1841 as Apostolic Nuncio. Called back to Rome in 1845, d'Andrea became secretary of the Council Congregation. Pope Pius IX created it on March 15, 1852. the cardinal priest and gave him the titular church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura and the Abbey of Subiaco , after which he became in 1853 the prefect of the Congregation of the Index was appointed. He exercised this office with rare moderation. Raised Cardinal Bishop of Sabina in 1860 , he resigned from the Prefectural Office of the Index Congregation in 1861.

When the establishment of national unity in Italy came into question in 1859 , d'Andrea joined the patriotic party. He advised Pope Pius IX. for the acceptance of Napoleon III. offered chairmanship of the Italian Confederation and to introduce liberal reforms in the Papal States . He also declared himself against the condemnation of the Gallican scriptures and the suppression of Catholic science. As a result, he incurred the disgrace of the Pope and the wrath of Giacomo Antonelli .

When d'Andrea left Rome in 1864 and went to Naples, he was - unsuccessfully asked to return - suspended in 1866 from the administration of his diocese and his abbey, his cardinal income was withdrawn and in September 1867 he was deposed. He went back to Rome, submitted to the Pope, and was rehabilitated on January 17, 1868. Cardinal Girolamo d'Andrea died four weeks after his 56th birthday in Rome without having regained his previous offices.
