Louis-François-Auguste de Rohan-Chabot (born February 29, 1788 in Paris , † February 8, 1833 in Chenecey ) was a French clergyman, Archbishop of Besançon and cardinal .

Life

He came from the Breton noble family of Rohan and was the eldest of seven children of Duke Alexandre Louis Auguste de Rohan-Chabot and his wife Anne Elisabeth de Montmorency . During the French Revolution he followed his father into emigration, from which the family returned to Paris in 1800. When his grandfather, the Duke of Rohan, died in 1807, the title passed to his father and he himself became Prince of Léon. He married the 17-year-old Marie Georgine Armandine de Sérent on May 2, 1808. In 1809 he became chamberlain to the French Emperor Napoléon I Bonaparte , a position he held until the fall of Napoleon in 1814. His wife died of burns on January 10, 1815 after the hem of her dress caught fire. After the death of his father in 1816 he became Duke of Rohan himself.

Louis-François-Auguste de Rohan-Chabot entered the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Paris in 1819 . On June 1, 1822, he received the sacrament of ordination . After pastoral work in La Roche-Guyon , he became Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Paris . On June 23, 1828 he was appointed Archbishop of Auch . He received his episcopal ordination on January 18, 1829 in the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral, the Archbishop of Paris Hyacinthe-Louis de Quélen ; Co - consecrators were Louis-Augustine de Montblanc (1767-1841), Archbishop of Tours , and Guillaume-Aubin de Villèle (1770-1841), Archbishop of Bourges . On December 15, 1828, he was transferred to the archbishopric of Besançon .

Pope Pius VIII elevated him to cardinal priest in the consistory of July 5, 1830 . The fall of the Bourbon monarchy after the July Revolution of 1830 forced him to retreat first to Belgium and later to Switzerland. He took part in the conclave from 1830-1831 , which Pope Gregory XVI. chose. On February 28, 1831, the Pope awarded him the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santissima Trinità al Monte Pincio .

In 1832 he returned to his diocese . On February 8, 1833, he died in Chenecey, 15 km south of Besançon, of a typhoid fever. He was buried in Besançon Cathedral.
