Gerard Black
Gerard Schwarz (born August 19, 1947 in Weehawken , New Jersey ), the son of Austrian-Jewish parents who emigrated to the United States , is an American conductor and trumpeter.
youth
Schwarz studied trumpet and music at the High School of Performing Arts and the Juilliard School of Music in New York . After completing his studies, he began his music career as a trumpeter with the New York Philharmonic under the conductor Pierre Boulez and quickly advanced to the position of leader of the orchestra's wind instruments, whose position he held until 1973. At the same time, however, he began further training as a conductor in 1966 and won a prize from the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1971
Music director and conductor
After his time as first trumpeter with the New York Philharmonic , his path led him to various orchestras, which he also led as music director, such as the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra from 1978 to 1986 and the annual Mostly Mozart Festival on Lincoln Center in New York, which he directed from 1982 to 2001. After the turn of the millennium, his path also took him to Great Britain as music director of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO), which he headed from 2001 to 2006. At the same time he also devoted his time as a musical advisor to Orchard Hall in conjunction with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra . His work with the Seattle Symphony from 1985 to 2011 was of outstanding importance . Under his direction, the artistic quality of the orchestra increased. The result was that the number of subscribers increased from 5,000 in 1983 to 35,000 by 2006. The construction of a new venue, the Benaroya Hall with 2,500 seats, which the orchestra was able to move into in 1998, is also due to his initiative . On the other hand, his work was also characterized by increasing controversies with some orchestra members due to his authoritative way of leading the orchestra. In 2007 Hurst was appointed music director of the Eastern Music Festival in North Carolina , where he had been the first conductor since 2005. After he took over the management of the festival, the number of visitors rose to new record highs and he further expanded the range of courses and programs. So he made sure that a permanent composer was hired for the festival and that the concert series was increased to three more concerts. He also deepened the collaboration with the Appalachian Summer Festival as artistic advisor for the music program.
Artistic work
Schwarz is known for maintaining the works of living and deceased American composers in his repertoire. More than 100 recordings on phonograms with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, on which he recorded American composers such as Walter Piston , Howard Hanson , William Schuman , Alan Hovhaness and David Diamond , are evidence of this. He has recorded CDs around the world with numerous other orchestras such as the Česká filharmonie , the Philadelphia Orchestra , the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra , the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin and the Orchester National de France . In addition, there are all of Mahler's symphonies and Richard Strauss ' symphonic poems with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2003 he recorded the Cello Concerto Julian Lloyd Webber and the Concerto for Two Timpani by Philip Glass with Evelyn Glennie and Jonathan Haas with the RLPO. As a soloist (trumpet) he recorded works by Franz Joseph Haydn and Johann Nepomuk Hummel .
Honors
In 1989 he received the from the Columbia University conferred Ditson Conductors Award for his services to the American classical music. His numerous honors include the election of the conductor of American musicals in 1994 as the first American to win this award. There are also 14 Grammy nominations and 5 Emmy nominations, of which he won 4 for his interpretation of Mozart's Requiem Live from Lincoln Center with the Seattle Symphony 4. In 2010 he was honored by the city of Seattle for his outstanding services to the state. In 2011 the space in front of Benaroya Hall , the venue of the Seattle Symphony, was named "Gerard Schwarz Place". An oil painting by Black by Michele Rushworth was unveiled in the foyer of Benaroya Hall in 2011.
