Barthélemy Bruguière MEP (born February 12, 1792 in Raissac-d'Aude , France , † October 20, 1835 ) was a French bishop of the Paris Mission in Korea and Siam .

Life

Bruguière studied at the seminary in Carcassonne . He was ordained a priest on October 23, 1815 and taught in seminary for a decade. Because he wanted to go to the Mission to Vietnam , he joined the Paris Mission (MEP). In 1827 he arrived in Asia and was sent to Esprit-Marie-Joseph Florens , Vicar Apostolic of Siam , who had only one missionary priest. There he learned the Thai language , but soon found out that the majority of Christians were not Thai , but Khmer , Chinese , Vietnamese and mixed race of Portuguese and Asians . Since the Thai Buddhists were not very amenable to conversion, he concentrated on the minorities.

Bruguière taught at Bangkok Cathedral for several years. Upon repeated request from Florens, Pope Leo XII. him on February 5, 1828 as coadjutor of the Vicar Apostolic of Siam and titular bishop of Capsus . On June 29, 1829, Esprit-Marie-Joseph Florens, Vicar Apostolic of Siam , consecrated him as bishop. After the two missionary priests Claude-Antoine Deschavannes and Jean-Baptiste Pallegoix had arrived in Bangkok, Bruguière went to Penang in 1831 , where he taught with Jacques-Honoré Chastan, Jean-Baptiste Boucho, Jean Pierre Barbe and Laurent Imbert . Due to the better finances and the better personnel situation of the Paris mission on site, his presence in Siam was no longer necessary and the thought arose that he should set up a new mission in Korea. Florens supported the cause even though he lost his successor.

On September 9, 1831, Pope Gregory XVI appointed Bruguière as first Vicar Apostolic of Korea . In 1835 he sailed from Singapore to Manila , from there to Macau and on via Fujian to Shanxi . Because of the persecution of Christians in China and the political changes in Korea, he took refuge in the Christian population in Chongli , where he met his brother, Pierre-Philibert Maubant , who was a volunteer in the Korean mission. On October 7, 1835, they left for Korea. Bruguière fell ill and died on October 20, 1835, before they even reached Korea. Maubant was later imprisoned and executed in Korea with Jacques-Honoré Chastan and Laurent Joseph Marius Imbert. They are considered martyrs .

In 1931 the body of Bruguière was reburied in a cemetery in Seoul.
