Laurent-Joseph-Marius Imbert MEP (born March 23, 1796 in Marignane , † September 21, 1839 near Seoul ) was a French Roman Catholic missionary and bishop. He was canonized in 1984 .
Life
Imbert joined the Paris Mission, studied in Aix-en-Provence and was ordained a priest on December 18, 1819 . He worked in Sichuan from 1820 before working in Singapore, Malaysia and Macao between 1821 and 1825. After the Congregation De Propaganda Fide proposed him for missionary work in Korea, Imbert voluntarily decided to do the job.
Pope Gregory XVI appointed him on April 26, 1836 titular Bishop of Capsus and Vicar Apostolic of Korea. The following year he left China and received episcopal ordination in Korea . During Imbert's work, the number of Catholics in Korea rose from around 6,000 to just under 10,000. In February 1839, the persecution of Christians began in Korea, so that the Vicar Apostolic in Suwon had to go into hiding with a catechist living there.
On August 11, 1839, Imbert surrendered to government officials to avoid further arrests among the country's Catholics. Despite the use of torture, he did not renounce his belief. On September 21, 1839, he and two other French missionaries were executed by beheading in Saenamteo, an area north of what was then the metropolitan area of Seoul.
Beatification and Canonization
Laurent Imbert's canonization was initiated in September 1857. Pope Pius XI beatified him in 1925. On May 6, 1984, he was canonized by John Paul II , who was on a trip through Asia, in Seoul together with 102 other Korean martyrs. Imbert's feast day is September 21, the day of his execution. The Saenamteo area, where the execution took place, is now a memorial and pilgrimage site
