Baltazar (born January 14, 1926 in Santos , † March 25, 1997 in São Paulo ; actually Oswaldo da Silva ) was a Brazilian football player . He played as a striker and was called Cabecinha de Ouro ( Little Gold ) because of his headball strength .

Career

In his career from 1943 to 1959, Baltazar played for five clubs, among which the most famous Corinthians was São Paulo . He scored 267 goals, 71 of them with a header.

Baltazar was Brazilian national team and participated in the World Championships in 1950 and 1954 in part. The 1950 World Cup in their own country was tragic: in the decisive game Brazil a draw was enough and they lost to Uruguay. Baltazar, who scored twice in the tournament, was one of the four players who remained in the Brazilian squad in 1954. In Brazil's qualification for the 1954 World Cup, he scored five of the eight Brazilian goals. Baltazar met once at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. Brazil were eliminated from the top favorites Hungary in the quarter-finals. The game in the Wankdorf Stadium went down in World Cup history due to numerous unsportsmanlike activities during the game and afterwards as the Battle of Bern .

He died in 1997 at the age of 71.
