The organizer Sweden went as the favorite in Group 3 and lived up to its role. Mexico (3-0) and Hungary (2-1), which only had three players from the 54-man wonder team left (the 1956 uprising had spread the team across Europe and not all players were released), were defeated. Most recently, the Swedes were able to afford a 0-0 win against Wales. This result was important for the Welsh as it got them into the playoff against Hungary and won 2-1. As expected, Mexico finished last in the group.

In their fourth World Cup participation, the Mexican national team played the opening game for the third time. After 1950 (Brazil), this time "el Tri" faced the host again, against whom the Mexican press had expected a chance. Their optimism sounded something like this: “Sweden is an improvised team with five players who earn their living in Italy. Mexico is characterized by a good team spirit and is tactically well positioned by national coach López Herranz. ”But the reality was different: Sweden dominated the game from the start and Mexico proved to be an ideal opponent for the hosts.

There was not much going forward in Mexico and in the back the dangerous Swedish attackers Skoglund , Hamrin and Liedholm could not be brought under control. In the 27th minute, Skoglund José Villegas hurried away and crossed the ball into the box to Simonsson, who headed the hosts ahead. In the 57th minute, Jorge Romo brought Hamrin down in the penalty area and Liedholm converted the penalty. Seven minutes later, Simonsson was successful again after a presentation by Skoglund and produced the 3-0 final result.

Stadium: Råsundastadion ( Solna )

Spectators: 25,000

Referee: Lemešić ( Yugoslavia )

Goals: 0: 1 Allchurch (32nd), 1: 1 Belmonte (89th)

Although Mexico dominated the game in the early stages, the Welsh took the lead after a good half hour. In the final phase, the Mexicans threw everything forward again and were finally rewarded for their tireless efforts: shortly before the end of the game, Carlos Blanco received the ball on the right flank. With a cleverly faked shot he let the opposing defenders run into space, so that the way was clear for a pass to Enrique Sesma. He passed the ball on to Jaime Belmonte, who pounded it into the net with a powerful headbutt. By winning this point, the Mexican selection remained undefeated for the first time in their tenth World Cup game.

  • Hungary 1957Hungary Hungary - Mexico 4: 0 (1: 0)Mexico 1934Mexico

Stadium: Jernvallen ( Sandviken )

Spectators: 13,300

Referee: Eriksson ( Finland )

Goals: 1-0 Tichy (19th), 2-0 Tichy (46th), 3-0 Sándor (54th), 4-0 Bencsics (69th)

The conditions for the game against Hungary were not particularly favorable for "el Tri". Several players were hit and therefore not in top form. The defense in particular was severely weakened: regular defender Jesús del Muro suffered a strain in his lower leg and another regular defender, Jorge Romo, suffered an ankle sprain from a kick from John Charles during the game against Wales . He had to be replaced against Hungary by Guillermo Sepúlveda, who was handicapped by an injury that had not yet fully recovered and had no match practice. After only four minutes he collided with Karoly Sandor and had to be treated for several minutes. Although "El Tigre" came back in the 13th minute, had to leave the field again after 28 minutes - and definitely - leave. Since no substitutions were possible at that time, Mexico played undernumbered for more than an hour and was literally played against the wall by the Hungarians. It was only thanks to goalkeeper Carbajal that Mexico did not lose even higher. The Swedish audience honored his performance and said goodbye to him with applause both after the break and the final whistle.
