Particularly interesting was Group 4, in which Brazil prevailed first against the Soviet Union, England and the third place in the 1954 World Cup, Austria. After the 3-0 win against Austria, the South Americans could only wrest a 0-0 from the English. Against the Soviet Union (2-0 through two goals from Vava), a 17-year-old young man appeared in the starting line-up for the first time and was supposed to cause a sensation: Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé. Second in the group went to the Russians (with goalkeeping legend Lev Yashin), who had to go into the play-off game due to the equality of points with the favorite England (had to cope with the loss of the Manchester United players who had been killed in the plane crash) : Defeated 0. Austria (middle runner: Ernst Happel!) Could not do much in this group and was bottom of the table with only one draw (against England).
