qualification

In qualifying for the 1958 World Cup, Austria faced the Netherlands and the football gnome Luxembourg .

After a clear 7-0 victory over the Luxembourgers, 65,000 spectators in Vienna saw the first meeting with the competitor for the World Cup - the Netherlands. After a double hit by Dutchman Noud van Melis (31st, 32nd), the Austrian team were already 2-0 down at halftime. But in the second half the game was turned around by goals from Karl Koller (47th), Hans Buzek (80th) and Karl Stotz (89th).

In the second leg, Josef Argauer's team took the lead through Gerhard Hanappi (29th). The Dutch only managed to equalize in the second half, which meant that Austria was practically qualified for the 1958 World Cup. The final game against Luxembourg was won 3-0.
