Bryan Douglas (born May 27, 1934 in Blackburn ) is a retired English football player . Between 1957 and 1963 he completed a total of 36 international matches for the English national football team and scored 11 goals.

Career

Douglas was born the son of a machinist, with four brothers and two sisters. He first attended the Blakemore Secondary Modern School and then worked as an engine mechanic in a bus workshop in Blackburn . In his youth he played for Blackburn Town and moved to the youth division of Blackburn Rovers in 1952 , having previously turned down offers from Blackpool , Bolton , Preston and Wolverhampton , among others .

Douglas did his military service during this time and didn't make his debut against Notts County until August 1954 . He played mostly in the right midfield position and as a right winger and was characterized by an above-average passing game and good ball control. Although Douglas only played in the second division, he was called up to the England team in 1957 and made his debut on October 19 in Cardiff in a 4-0 win against Wales . In the same season, Douglas was promoted to the First Division with Blackburn . He also played the first three group matches at the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . In the playoff against the Soviet Union for a place in the quarter-finals, which England lost, he was missing.

In 1960, Douglas reached the final of the FA Cup with Blackburn , but it was clearly lost 3-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Two years later he played all four games at the 1962 World Cup in Chile and lost to the team from Brazil in the quarter-finals there after a successful preliminary round . In the following season he was the top scorer of his club and when a short time later his national team career was no longer continued, Douglas rose in the 1965/66 season with Blackburn from the first division. Due to an increasing vulnerability to injuries, he ended his career as a football player in the 1968/69 season after 438 championship games and 100 goals. He later returned briefly for the amateur club Great Harwood , where he played with Ronnie Clayton and Roy Vernon .

After his career, he worked initially as a salesman and for the next 18 years as a representative for a paper mill. Today he continues to live in Blackburn as a pensioner.
