Ronald "Ronnie" Clayton (born August 5, 1934 in Preston , † October 29, 2010 in Blackburn ) was an English football player . He played for the Blackburn Rovers for 20 years , completed a total of 35 international matches for the English national football team between 1955 and 1960 and was part of the squad that took part in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden .

Athletic career

Clayton joined the Blackburn Rovers in 1949 after failing with local rivals Preston North End during trial training with his brother . The midfielder , who stayed there mostly on the offensive outside position, made his debut on April 25, 1951 in the English second division in a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers . After completing his military service at the age of 20, he was appointed team captain of the Rovers and, after previous appearances in the U23 youth team, was appointed to the national team in 1955, for which he then played his first game on November 2 against Northern Ireland at Wembley Stadium made.

With Blackburn continuing to play in the second division, Clayton received offers from Chelsea , Liverpool , Manchester City and Manchester United , which he turned down. In 1958 he was finally promoted to the First Division with his club and he was appointed to the squad for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden. However, he was only used in the 0: 1 in the decisive group game against the Soviet Union , when both teams had to compete in a second game due to equal points and goals.

During his career, he distinguished himself more as a goal setter with an intense willingness to run and crosses than as a goalscorer and therefore only scored 15 goals in a total of 581 games. Towards the end of his career, Clayton moved to a central defensive position and in 1966 had to accompany his club from Blackburn in relegation to the Second Division . He played his last game for Blackburn in 1969 before ending his footballing career as a player-coach at the lower-class Morecambe FC .

Clayton last lived in Wilpshire , north of Blackburn , and was part of a group that organized tours of the Rovers' stadium, Ewood Park .
