Thomas Royston Vernon (born April 14, 1937 in Ffynnongroew , Flintshire , † December 4, 1993 ) was a Welsh football player .

life and career

Vernon began his career with the Blackburn Rovers at the age of 18. In 1960 he moved to Everton for a transfer fee of £ 27,000. He made his debut for Toffees that same year. He was the top scorer and captain of Everton FC in the championship triumph in 1963. Vernon was a very slim person with a whisker nose , he had a good shot, perfect eye for goal and good technique. A former teammate said that Vernon looked like Pinocchio . He was also known for his callousness on penalties. In 1965 he left Everton for Stoke City for £ 40,000 before ending his career in South Africa . Internationally, he played 32 times for the Welsh national football team and scored eight goals. He was also a member of the Welsh selection for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . Because of his greatest vice, smoking, Vernon developed cancer and died of the disease in 1993.
