Leopold Barschandt

Leopold Barschandt (born August 12, 1925 in Vienna ; † October 5, 2000 ) was an Austrian football player in the position of defender or midfielder . He took part with the Austrian national soccer team in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland, where he took 3rd place with the team. With his parent club Wiener Sport-Club he was able to dominate the national championship in the late 1950s.

Career

Leopold Barschandt began his career as a football player at Helfort before it on the SC gasworks after Dornbach for Wiener Sport-Club came. With the WSC, Leopold Barschandt even rose to the second division at short notice in 1952, but managed to get promoted again immediately and was runner-up with the Dornbachers two years later. He made his first two appearances in the Austrian national soccer team in May 1954, one month before the World Cup in Switzerland. In the 2-0 win over Wales or 5-0 over Norway , Leopold Barschandt proved himself as a left defender alongside Ernst Happel and Gerhard Hanappi , so that he already had his regular place at the World Cup .

At the World Cup, Austria made it to the semi-finals, where they were eliminated against Germany . The small final for third place was won against the reigning world champion Uruguay . Leopold Barschandt played in all matches except for the semi-final against Germany. He stayed in the national team's regular formation until the 1958 World Cup and also accompanied it to the World Cup in Sweden. However, he was no longer used there. In the meantime, Leopold Barschandt had become the sports club's captain and won his first national title.

The Dornbacher remained unbeaten in the championship for almost two years from December 1957 to September 1959 (41 games) and were able to become champions twice during that time. Leopold Barschandt was also successful with his team in the European Champion Clubs' Cup . He made it to the quarter-finals of the competition twice and knocked out Italian champions Juventus Turin 7-0 on the way there . In 1960 he ended his career with the sports club and let the same end with SV nitrogen Linz .
