Franz Swoboda (born February 15, 1933 - † July 27, 2017 ) was an Austrian football player . The defender took part in the 1958 World Cup in Sweden.

Career

Franz Swoboda came from the offspring of Vienna Austria and played for the club in the A-League for the first time in 1950/51 . Since the two baking positions with Karl Kowanz and Karl Stotz were prominently occupied in the Violette's then offensive system , he had little chance of a regular place. In his first championship title in 1952/53 , he completed only eleven of the 26 championship games, correspondingly mostly as a left side runner. Only in the World Cup system from 1954/55 , in which Stotz retired as a stopper and Karl Kowanz moved to the right, Franz Swoboda was a regular player as a left defender and soon acquired the reputation of the “best left outside deck” in Austria, especially through his technical versatility and his positional play knew how to please.

So it happened that Franz Swoboda made his debut in the Austrian national team against Hungary on October 16, 1955 and was also a regular here in the following period. Only during the heyday of the sports club was Erich Hasenkopf able to dispute this position for a time. The greatest success in the national dress was the qualification for the World Cup in Sweden in 1958 , but Austria was eliminated in the round of the best 16 against the eventual winners Brazil , the eventual European champions Soviet Union and England .

In 1960/61 , Franz Swoboda had reached a certain point at a high point in his creative time, with Austria he was champion for the second time and this with a record advantage before he sustained a serious injury in April 1961. Even in the national team of the Decker era he was completely convincing, his last three international matches ended 3-0 against Spain , 3-1 against the Soviet Union and with a 2-1 away win against Italy . Due to his injury, Franz Swoboda not only fell from the team, a failed operation and a long illness practically meant the end of his career. A comeback attempt over two years later was not crowned with success at Austria.
