Yakuake (Yet Another kuake ) is a KDE - terminal emulator . The inspiration for the design were consoles in computer games such as Quake , which scrolled down from the top of the screen when a key was pressed and disappeared again when a key was pressed again by scrolling up.

If the Yakuake console is hidden, the program continues to run in the background. For this reason, it can be displayed again much faster than starting a new terminal. A Yakuake session can also be faded in and out and managed on all desktops at the touch of a button. This makes the console suitable both for the quick execution of short commands for interactive use and for starting long-running command line tasks, the output of which rarely requires a glance. This convenience compared to conventional window-bound terminal emulators such as console (KDE) or xterm and the unusual design brought Yakuake to the top 3 most popular KDE programs on kde-apps.org in early 2008 .
