Germany were drawn in Group 1 Argentina, Czechoslovakia and Northern Ireland. The first game was against the highly rated Argentinians. 31,000 spectators in Malmö saw the South Americans lead in the third minute and it took a long time for the Germans to calm down their game, organized by 38-year-old Fritz Walter. In addition, one of the most important 'heroes of Bern', Helmut Rahn, was still one of the most dangerous goal scorers in the world. In the 32nd minute, the 'Boss' equalized and shortly before the final whistle, the 3: 1. In between, the 21-year-old Uwe Seeler from Hamburg made it 2-1. Then it went against the Czechoslovaks, who had made a false start against the Northern Irish at 0-1. Although the ambitious opponent led 2-0 at halftime, the Germans showed their counter-strength in the second half, which Schäfer (60th) and Rahn (70th) converted into countable figures. Above all, the Schäfer-Tor was extremely controversial long after the game, as the Cologne player pushed the ball along with the keeper Dolesji over the line. But the draw was a good starting position before the game against the Northern Irish. After playing against the CSSR in Helsingborg, you were allowed to play against Northern Ireland again in Malmö. MacParland, the opponent's feared striker, made it 1-0 in the Herkenrath goal (17th), but Helmut Rahn equalized three minutes later. The Germans had gained an overweight, but it was precisely in this phase that the Northern Irish (again MacParland, 60th) took the lead. The following game on a goal saw an excellent goalkeeper Harry Gregg, who destroyed all chances of the Germans - except for a violent shot by Uwe Seeler, which saved the Herberger team from a play-off. Germany were group winners, while Northern Ireland had to play against the Czechoslovaks (2-1 win after extra time).
