Wilbur Cush

Wilbur "Billy" Cush (born June 10, 1928 in Lurgan , County Armagh , † July 28, 1981 ibid) was a Northern Irish football player .

Athletic career

Cush began his career at Glenavon FC , with whom he became Irish champions in 1952 and doubles as champions and cup winners five years later . In 1957 he moved to Leeds United in England. There he rose to team captain , before he returned to Northern Ireland after relegating the club from the First Division in 1960. Initially active for FC Portadown , he later returned to Glenavon FC.

In 1950, Cush made his debut for the Northern Irish national team. As an irregular team member, he took part in the 1958 World Cup with the selection team supervised by Peter Doherty . He had shone as a goal scorer in the decisive qualifying game against Italy and scored the game- winning 2-1. In Sweden he reached the quarterfinals with the team at the side of Danny Blanchflower , Jimmy McIlroy and Willie Cunningham , in which they were eliminated against France after a 4-0 defeat. In the group stage he played a decisive role in advancing through the 1-0 win over Czechoslovakia .

Towards the end of his career, Cush also worked as a coach before retiring from football and becoming a butcher in his hometown.
