The Portadown Football Club is a Northern Irish football club from Portadown , in the NifL Championship , the second tier of Northern Ireland plays.
history
The club, founded in 1924, won its first title in 1934 with the Gold Cup . Other regional titles followed in the following decades, but the club was only able to celebrate its first major titles in the 1990s. In 1990 they won the Northern Irish Championship for the first time and managed to defend this title the following year. The double came in 1991 when Glenavon FC were beaten 2-1 in the cup final.
In 1996 Portadown FC won their third league title and in the same year the Northern Irish League Cup by beating Crusaders FC 2-1 . In 1999 the second cup victory followed, as final opponent Cliftonville was excluded. The title defense failed because of a 0-1 final defeat against Glentoran .
In 2002 Portadown FC celebrated their fourth championship when Glentoran were relegated to second place by one point. They missed the double with a 2-1 defeat in the cup final against FC Linfield . Things went better in the 2005 final, Larne FC were outclassed 5-1.
By decision of April 30, 2008, Portadown FC was denied the license to participate in the newly designed IFA Premiership because the club had only submitted the application for a license after the deadline. An appeal against the decision of the IFA Licensing Committee was subsequently rejected by the IFA Appeals Chamber.
This meant that Portadown FC had to compete in the second highest division, the IFA Championship (formerly First Division) in the 2008/09 season. However, with the championship in the IFA Championship 2009, the "Ports" achieved immediate promotion back to the IFA Premiership.
