James "Jimmy" McIlroy (born October 25, 1931 in Lambeg , † August 20, 2018 ) was a Northern Irish football player .
Athletic career
Club career
McIlroy began his professional career at Glentoran FC , but moved to Burnley FC in England at a young age in 1950 . Shortly before his 19th birthday, he made his debut in October in the league game against Sunderland FC in the English elite series. In the following years he advanced to the side of Jimmy Adamson , John Angus and Brian Miller to the club's regular player and was part of the championship team of 1960, when the title was won by one point over the Wolverhampton Wanderers for the second time in the club's history since 1921 . Two years later he stood next to Alex Elder , Jimmy Robson and John Connelly in the final of the FA Cup , which Tottenham Hotspur, however, won 3-1.
After twelve years at Burnley FC, chairman Bob Lord sold him to Stoke City in January 1963 . At the releasing club there were protests from the club's supporters, some of which subsequently boycotted the club's games. He stayed with Stoke City for three years before retiring from Oldham Athletic in the summer of 1968 . For a short time he later tried his hand at coaching and was the first non-Englishman to be responsible for the Bolton Wanderers in November 1970 . Jimmy Meadows replaced him after 18 days in office .
National team career
McIlroy made his debut for the Northern Irish national team in 1951 . With her he qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time when the team prevailed against Italy and Portugal and reached the World Cup in 1958 . In the group stage he was used in all three regular games as well as the playoff against the tied team of Czechoslovakia . Had they won 2-1 after extra time, the exhausted team had no chance two days later against France in the 0-4 defeat. In 1965 he played the last of his 55 international matches.
death
McIlroy died on August 20, 2018 at the age of 86.
