John Michael Connelly (born July 18, 1938 in St Helens , England , † October 25, 2012 in Barrowford , Lancashire ) was an English football player . Between 1959 and 1966 he made 20 international matches for the English national football team , scored seven goals and was part of the team that won the 1966 World Cup in his own country .
Athletic career
After his youth at the local club St. Theresa's School Old Boys and St. Helens Town , Connelly joined the then first division club Burnley FC at the age of 18 . There he developed into a fast and dangerous winger and won the English championship with Burnley in 1960, but was injured in the crucial phase. During the 1959/60 season he also made his debut for the English national team when the team played 1-1 against Wales in Cardiff . Connelly had already played in a game of the U23 youth team.
After another runner-up and a third place Connelly moved after 105 goals in 265 games in April 1964 for a transfer of 56,250 pounds to Manchester United . In his first season he was able to win the championship with Manchester United and contributed 15 goals himself. He played his last game for the national team in England's opening game for the 1966 World Cup, when the team played 0-0 against Uruguay .
After a total of two seasons at Manchester Connelly joined the Blackburn Rovers after they had just been relegated from the First Division as bottom of the table . There he was again the club's top scorer in his first season, but could not rise to Blackburn in this or in the next three years. He then moved to the third division in 1970, to FC Bury , where he was relegated to the fourth division and remained there until the end of his career in 1973 after a total of 181 goals in 572 games.
After he retired, Connelly and his wife ran a fish-and-chip shop called "Connelly's Plaice" in Brierfield , near Burnley .
