Zdeněk Zikán (born November 10, 1937 in Prague , † February 14, 2013 ) was a Czechoslovak football player .

Player career

Zikán started playing football at Motorlet Prague . In 1956, the striker moved to Sparta Prague , where he remained without a goal and then returned to Motorlet.

Then Zikán went to ÚDA Praha to do his military service there, but was soon transferred to Dukla Pardubice , another army club. The left winger was in great shape in Pardubice , scoring 15 goals in the 1957/58 season.

The good performance brought him the first call-up to the Czechoslovak national team . On April 2, 1958, Czechoslovakia defeated the Federal Republic of Germany 3-2 in front of 50,000 spectators in Prague . Zíkan had scored the opening goal for his team in the ninth minute of the game.

Finally, Zikán was nominated for the 1958 World Cup in Sweden . The attacker scored four goals in three games. First, he met in the 2-2 group game against Germany. He scored twice in the 6-1 over Argentina . His goal in the playoff against Northern Ireland did not bring, the Czechoslovaks were eliminated with a 2-1 after extra time.

Shortly after the World Cup, Zikán was seriously injured in a friendly in Varnsdorf and suffered a double broken foot. The striker was out for the entire 1958/59 season. After his return to the field, he was never able to build on his old form. In the season 1959/60 he scored only three goals for Pardubice. Zikán was never called up to the national team.

After the season, Zikán moved to the then master Spartak Hradec Králové , with whom he spent a total of ten years. He ended his career as a player-coach at Transporta Chrudim.

In 2003 Zikán was awarded the Václav Jira Prize by the Czech Football Association .
