The Czechs were rated a little stronger against Brazil. But the vice world champion from 1934 had to accept a 2-1 defeat against the only South American team after a 1-1 draw in the second leg. Brazil lost two players in the first game to expulsion and Czechoslovakia lost their world-class goalkeeper Planicka to a broken arm, so that he could not take part in the playoff. The Brazilians played with nine new players (!) And the Czechoslovaks had to cope with a broken nose of the scorer Kopecky in the game.
