Josef Košťálek (born August 31, 1909 in Kročehlavy , † November 21, 1971 ) was a Czech football player and football coach . With Czechoslovakia he became vice world champion in 1934 .

Club career

Košťálek started playing football at SK Kročehlavy . In 1929 he was signed by Sparta Prague , to which he remained loyal throughout his career, apart from his years as a player- coach. First used as a striker, then as a right midfielder , Košťálek won the national championship with Sparta in 1932, 1936, 1938 and 1939, and the Mitropa Cup in 1935 .

National team

Josef Košťálek made his debut in the Czechoslovak national team on May 11, 1930, the ČSR won 3-2 in Paris against France . In the seventh minute Košťálek scored the Czechoslovak leadership.

In 1934 he took part in the World Cup in Italy . Czechoslovakia reached the final, in which they were defeated by the hosts 2-1 after extra time. The offensive player was also present at the World Cup in France in 1938. However, the Czechoslovaks failed in the second round in the replay against Brazil . In the opening game against the Netherlands , which ended 3-0 after extra time, Košťálek scored his second goal in the national dress.

Košťálek played his last of a total of 43 international matches on October 22, 1939, Czechoslovakia played in Prague against Ostmark, at least according to the Czech association, 5-5.

Trainer

Košťálek left Prague after the Second World War and was player- coach at Sparta Povážská Bystrica for one season . From 1946 to 1951 he held the same position at SK Rakovník . In the season 1957/58 he trained SONP Kladno .
