Jan Říha (soccer player)

Jan Říha (born November 11, 1915 in Písek , † December 15, 1995 ) was a Czech football player .

In the club

Jan Říha played football for SK Písek since he was 15 . At the age of 19, the right winger was tested by Slavia Prague but failed. He had already signed with Viktoria Pilsen in 1937 when Sparta Prague suddenly contacted him and was looking for a replacement for Ferdinand Faczinek , who had left. Říha convinced immediately and was to remain loyal to Sparta until the end of his career in 1950.

With Sparta Prague, Říha, who later switched to the connection position between center forward and right winger in the 2-3-5 system, won the national championship five times and the cup competition four times. For his club he scored 224 goals in 429 games, 111 of them in the top division. He is now a member of the club of goal scorers, the club ligových kanonýrů .

In the national team

After only two first division appearances, Jan Říha was appointed to the Czechoslovak national team on September 19, 1937 . In the 3-8 win against Hungary , he was one of the few who didn't disappoint and scored a goal. Říha was part of the line-up of Czechoslovakia during the 1938 World Cup in France. In the quarter-final against Brazil, Říha was sent off the field, the match ended 1-1 after extra time. Brazil beat the Czechoslovaks in the replay and won 2-1. His last of 25 appearances, in which he scored nine goals, had Říha on June 12, 1948, in Prague, Czechoslovakia defeated France 4-0.
