Germany had to compete with the ČSFR, which played so furiously against Costa Rica. Lothar Matthäus put the favorites in the lead with a penalty kick in the 24th minute and the Germans dominated the opponent for long stretches of the encounter, but in the end Völler and Klinsmann could not convince on that day. On the contrary: Despite Moravcik's dismissal (70th for 'improper shoe throwing'), the Czechoslovaks got the upper hand again in the final phase and ten of them still managed to score a few chances. The Germans struggled to reach the semi-finals.
