qualification
The current European champion Netherlands had to deal with their eternal rival Germany in Europe group 4 . Together they qualified. It was the first time that the Netherlands had taken part in a World Cup since the 1978 World Cup .

Preliminary round (Group F)

- Netherlands 1-1 Ireland - Goals: 1-0 Gullit (10th min.), 1-1 Quinn (71st min.)
The Netherlands qualified tied on points and goals with Ireland . The lot had to decide in order to find the opponent for the round of 16.
Round of 16
- Netherlands 1-2 Germany - goals: 0-1 Klinsmann (50th min.), 0-2 Brehme (84th min.), 1-2 Ronald Koeman (88th min., Penalty kick)
The dramatic round of 16 game against Germany will be remembered above all because of the explosive early stages of the game. In the 22nd minute, Frank Rijkaard and Rudi Völler received the red card. When leaving the square, Völler was spat at by the passing Rijkaard, who has since been dubbed the Dutch Lama in Germany . In this game, as in the preliminary round, the Netherlands were never able to match the performance of the European Championship of 1988 and were eliminated in the second round.
