Bryan Roy (born February 12, 1970 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player . He played for Ajax Amsterdam , US Foggia , Nottingham Forest , Hertha BSC and NAC Breda .
Player career
Ajax Amsterdam
Bryan Roy began his playing career in 1987 with the Dutch record champions Ajax Amsterdam . Coach Leo Beenhakker relied on the young talent and so Roy was often used in his first season. In 1989/90 he won the Dutch championship with his team. For the 1991/92 season Louis van Gaal took over the coaching post and led Ajax to victory in the 1991/92 UEFA Cup in his first season , so that Roy achieved the greatest success of his career together with teammates like Danny Blind , Aron Winter and Dennis Bergkamp . After the season he moved to the Italian Serie A for the club US Foggia coached by Zdeněk Zeman .
US Foggia
The Italian Serie A attracted the best players in the world during this period. US Foggia also wanted to decorate itself with top international players and therefore signed the young Dutch international. In the Serie A 1992/93 the team reached 13th place only in the year before last. The following season led to a slight improvement and a ninth place in the table. Bryan Roy scored 12 league goals, making him the top scorer of his team. Due to his good performance, he had drawn the attention of the English club Nottingham Forest , which had just been promoted back to the Premier League . Roy moved to the island for £ 2,900,000.
Nottingham Forest
Forest had made direct resurgence after relegation in 1992/93. Also in the Premier League 1994/95 the team could shine with good performances. Behind champions Blackburn Rovers and runners-up Manchester United , the team from Nottingham came in third. Roy scored 13 goals in his first year, becoming the second top scorer of his team behind Stan Collymore (22 league goals). Collymore moved to Liverpool at the end of the season for £ 8,500,000 , leaving a huge void. In 1995/96 Forest only reached ninth place in the league, but made it to the quarter-finals of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup . Roy (25 league games / 8 goals) could not repeat his success of 1992, because Forest lost two games against Bayern Munich and was eliminated. The 1996/97 Premier League was all the more disappointing . Nottingham's players owed a lot and the club was relegated from bottom of the table at the end of the season. Roy (8 games / 3 goals) moved to Bundesliga promoted Hertha BSC for the 1997/98 season for 1,500,000 pounds .
Hertha BSC
In his first season with the Berliners, the climber took 11th place and was able to keep the class. The 1998/99 season should lead the team into even higher spheres. Hertha ended up in third place at the end of the season and moved into the 1999/2000 UEFA Champions League . In the following season, Berlin qualified for the UEFA Cup . Introduced as a supposed star purchase by Hertha in the summer of 1997, the 32-time Dutch international was never able to convince during his time with the Berliners. After a disappointing first season with 22 appearances and only one goal, he was hardly considered in his second season at Berlin Hertha. Only seven missions without a goal were on his record in the 1998/99 season. He did not lose his reservist role at Hertha in his final year and switched to the Dutch first division club NAC Breda before his contract expired during the winter break of the 2000/2001 season , where he ended his career in January 2002.
Dutch national team
Between September 1989 and March 1995 Bryan Roy played 32 times for the Dutch national team and scored nine goals. He took part in the 1990 World Cup (without action), the 1992 European Championship and the 1994 World Cup.
