Ireland and Romania relied on the motto “Safety first” and did not get a ball over the goal line in 120 minutes. Only on penalties did the players meet except for the Romanian Timofte, who failed due to goalkeeper oldie Bonner and thus heaved Ireland into the quarter-finals.

Remarks

When qualifying in 1989 and the announcement of the World Cup squad, Romania was socialist and used the socialist flag . At the final round in 1990 the flag, which is still valid today, was used.
