Ioan Angelo "Ionut" Lupescu (* 9. December 1968 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian football player , coach and current UEFA - functionary . He played a total of 227 Bundesliga games for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Borussia Mönchengladbach . For the Romanian national soccer team , he participated in the 1990 World Cup , the 1994 World Cup , the 1996 European Football Championship and the 2000 European Football Championship .
Player career
Ioan Lupescu began his career in 1975 in the youth of FC Admira Wacker , where his father Nicolae used to play and played football with Andreas Herzog , among others . In 1977 he moved to Mecanica Fină Bucharest, where his father began his coaching career. He then moved to Dinamo Bucharest in 1982 . He made his debut at the age of 17 in Divizia A when he ran up on September 21, 1986 in the 4-1 victory of Dinamo against SC Bacau . After winning the championship and the cup in the 1989/90 season , Lupescu moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany . There he won the DFB Cup in 1993 . After Bayer Leverkusen had only secured relegation on the last day of the 1995/96 season, Lupescu moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach . In 1998 he returned to Dinamo Bucharest and won the championship and cup again in 2000. After a short detour to Bursaspor in the Turkish Süper Lig at the beginning of the 2000/01 season, Lupescu returned again to Dinamo Bucharest. After playing in seven of the first eight league games of the 2001/02 season , Lupescu moved to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia in October 2001 . However, he couldn't cope with the heat there and terminated his contract after a few months.
National team
Lupescu made 74 appearances for Romania and scored six goals. He made his debut on February 3, 1988 against Israel . Lupescu took part in the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 1994 World Cup in the United States, reaching the quarter-finals. Also in the UEFA EURO 1996 in England and in the Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands Lupescu was in the squad and denied most of the games. After the European Championship, he resigned from the national team.
Lupescu ran a total of 7 times for the Romanian U-21 national team and scored one goal.
Coaching career
In 2003 Lupescu obtained his trainer license from the German Sport University Cologne . After the end of his active career, he became the coach of FCM Bacau , which played in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A , in December 2003 . At the end of the 2003/04 season , the club managed to stay relegated by only one point and the contract with Lupescu was dissolved on June 23, 2004. At the end of June 2004 Lupescu took over the coaching position at league rivals FC Brașov , which he gave up on August 30, 2004 after only five game days of the 2004/05 season . After he was vice-president of the Romanian professional football union for a while, he supported the president of the Romanian football association , Mircea Sandu , in his successful re-election in 2005. Since November 22, 2005 Lupescu has been the general director of the Romanian football association.

Awards
On March 25, 2008 Lupescu was awarded the "Meritul sportiv" III order of merit by the Romanian President Traian Băsescu for the qualification of the national team for the European Football Championship 2008 . Class excellent. He is an Honored Master of Sports.
