Kallstadt Saumagen

Saumagen is the name of a vineyard in the municipality of Kallstadt on the German Wine Route in Rhineland-Palatinate .

Location, climate, soils

The Kallstadter Saumagen belongs to the Rhineland-Palatinate wine-growing region Palatinate and here in turn to the Mittelhaardt-German Wine Route area . The Saumagen is a single layer and part of the Kobnert area . The location extends at the foot of the Haardt . Their height is between 160 and 220  m above sea level. NHN , it is 20% steep , 75% sloping and 5% flat. The soil consists mainly of loess - loam and limestone marl . Mainly Riesling is grown.

Surname

There are several theories about the origin of the name. According to one theory, it comes from the nickname of a previous owner, other theories are based on the shape of the plot, which is sack-shaped and thus resembles the Palatinate Saumagen . Another assumption sees the origin of the name in the headgear of the Palatinate winemakers; in the 19th century some hats were also known as Saumagen; the name Saumagen originated between 1810 and 1836.
