Nicolae Lupescu (born December 17, 1940 in Bucharest ; † September 6, 2017 there ) was a Romanian football player and coach . He completed a total of 368 games in the Divizia A and the Austrian National League A . He also took part in the 1970 World Cup.
Career
Nicolae Lupescu started playing football at ICAR Bucharest in 1954 at the age of 13. He first played at lower class clubs in his hometown Bucharest. After his time at Flacăra Roşie Bucharest (1958-1959) he moved to AS Academia Militară Bucharest in Divizia B for the 1960/61 season . After another year in Divizia B at Olimpia Bucharest , he received the opportunity to move to Rapid Bucharest in 1962 . There he made his debut in Divizia A on September 16, 1962 . After he had not become a regular player in his first season, he made his breakthrough in the 1963/64 season. During his time at Rapid, he won a championship title and the Romanian Cup once and was always represented in the top flight of the league. In 1972 Lupescu got the opportunity to move abroad and joined the Austrian national league team FC Admira / Wacker . There he ended his career in 1977.
Lupescu played a total of 14 European Cup games, all for Rapid Bucharest.
National team
Lupescu completed 21 appearances for the Romanian national soccer team . His first deployment was on June 17, 1964 against Yugoslavia . Lupescu was nominated by national coach Angelo Niculescu for the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1970 and used in all three games.
Lupescu also has 15 international appearances in the Romanian U23 national team.
Coaching career
After the end of his playing career, Lupescu returned to Romania in the autumn of 1977 and initially looked after the team from Mecanica Fină Bucharest , with which in 1979 the promotion to Divizia B was achieved. He also coached this club in the 1980/81 seasons and most recently in 1984/85, after having been coach of Rapid Bucharest (1979/80), FC Șoimii IPA Sibiu (1981/82) and Gloria Buzău (1982-1984). In the 1985/86 season he was again head coach of Rapid Bucharest in the Divizia A .

Nicolae Lupescu was the father of the former Romanian national player and Bundesliga professional Ioan Lupescu , whom he looked after as a manager after retiring from his own coaching career.
