Michael "Mischa" Klein (born October 10, 1959 in Amnaş , Sibiu district ; † February 2, 1993 in Krefeld , Germany ) was a Romanian football player from the German-speaking minority of the Transylvanian Saxons .
Career
Klein began his career in 1973 in the youth of Corvinul Hunedoara . There he made his debut in Divizia A on August 24, 1977 when playing against FC Argeş Piteşti . For the first half of the 1978/79 season he was loaned to the neighboring second division club Aurul Brad . However, he returned to the second round in 1979 back again, could not prevent Corvinul in the Divizia B descent. In 1980, however, the club managed to immediately return to the Divizia A. Klein remained loyal to his home club until 1989 and played, among other things, in the 1982/1983 season in the UEFA Cup, where the club after a success over the Grazer AK (1: 1 and 3: 0) in the second round to FK Sarajevo (4: 4 and 0: 4) failed.
In 1989, Klein moved to the Romanian top club Dinamo Bucharest , where he won the Romanian Cup and the championship in his first season. After a total of 322 top division games and 36 goals, he moved to Bayer 05 Uerdingen in Germany in 1990 in the 1st Bundesliga . After he had to go into the second division with the Krefeld team in his first season, he managed to get up again in the following year.
Klein died of heart failure on February 2, 1993 during an endurance run with the Bayer 05 Uerdingen team. The Corvinul Hunedoara stadium was renamed Stadionul Michael Klein after his death .
He scored 2 goals in 13 European Cup games.
National team
He made his debut for the Romanian national team on September 9, 1981 when he came on as a substitute for Bulgaria . The defensive midfielder took part with his country in the European Championship in 1984 and the World Cup in 1990 , in which he was used in all four Romanian games.
