Silviu Lung (born September 9, 1956 in Sânmiclăuș ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 416 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A . Lung took part in the 1984 European Football Championship and the 1990 World Football Championship .

Career as a player

Silviu Lung was the son of a blacksmith who moved with his family from Sânmiclăuș to Carei , 15 kilometers away, in 1957 . As a student, Lung was successful in various sports (handball, basketball, table tennis) but decided to pursue a footballing career. From 1971 he played in the youth team of Victoria Carei and was brought into the first team to compete in Divizia C by coach Constantin Ionescu at the age of sixteen . Lung immediately became a regular goalkeeper and was discovered by match observer Coloman Braun-Bogdan in one of the last championship games of the 1972/73 season, when the promotion of Victoria Carei to Divizia B was already certain . He recommended him to Constantin Ardeleanu , the coach of the Romanian junior national team, to which Lung was subsequently called up several times. Victoria Carei's second division players were on the payroll of a local company run by a friend of Corneliu Andrei Stroe , vice-president of Universitatea Craiova . Through this, the transfer to Craiova came about in 1974, although at the same time there had been a higher-endowed offer from Politehnica Timișoara . Coincidentally, Lung played his first game in Divizia A on August 28, 1974 in the 1-0 home win of Universitatea Craiova against Politehnica Timișoara. In 1979 he fell ill with hepatitis A and had to sit out for almost a year because the infection was only recognized at an advanced stage.

Lung achieved the greatest successes of his career with Craiova: in 1980 and 1981 he won the Romanian championship, in 1978 and 1983 the Romanian cup. In the 1982/83 season Lung moved with Craiova in the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup , but was only eliminated there because of the away goals rule against Benfica Lisbon . In the summer of 1988, Lung's former team-mate Sorin Cârțu was brought in a new coach who wanted to rebuild the team. Lung received approval and then moved to Steaua Bucharest , one of the best European clubs of the time, after he had been assured by Defense Minister Ilie Ceaușescu that he would be able to move abroad within two years. In 1989 Steaua was Romanian champion and reached the final in the European Cup , but was clearly defeated by AC Milan .

In 1990 Lung moved - like many other strong Romanian players - abroad and joined CD Logroñés from the Primera División . Since he did not become a regular player, Lung returned to Romania in 1991 and initially played for Electroputere Craiova , before joining Universitatea Craiova again during the winter break of 1992/93 and ending his career there in late October 1993 during the first half of the 1993/94 season . The main reason for this was a bribery attempt before the away game at FC Brașov , which Lung rejected . For the last match day of the second division season 2005/06 Lung was appointed for the last time in the squad of Universitatea Craiova, but did not come to his farewell game at the request of coach Ovidiu Stîngă .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Lung began a career as a football coach and initially worked as an assistant coach to Marian Bondrea at Universitatea Craiova before he went to Olympique Casablanca for a short time in 1994 . After returning to Romania he became assistant coach at FC Național Bucharest in 1995 and then moved to Minerul Motru in Divizia C, where he was promoted to Divizia B. Despite a successful season, Lung left the club and returned in May 1997 for the last seven championship games of the 1996/97 season as a coach to Universitatea Craiova, and then worked for two seasons as an assistant coach. After Ilie Balaci's contract termination in September 1998, Lung jumped in as an interim coach until the end of the first half of the season and was replaced on December 11, 1998 by Marian Bondrea.

After talks with Doru Isac, a Romanian trainer who has lived in Japan since 1991, Lung also went to Japan in 2000 and initially supported Isac as a youth trainer at Nagoya Grampus Eight . After a year and a half, he came to the second half of the 2001 season as a goalkeeping coach for the first team, which was initially coached by Tetsuro Miura and then by Zdenko Verdenik . After his contract expired, he returned to Romania at the end of December 2002 and began in January 2003 as a goalkeeping coach under Sorin Cârțu at Universitatea Craiova. In the following two and a half years he was temporarily led by the club as head coach, as Nicolò Napoli (January 2004 to March 2004) and Eugen Neagoe (May 2005 to June 2005) did not have the necessary coaching license. On July 1, 2005, Lung took the first-time relegation of Universitatea Craiova to the second division as an opportunity to accept the offer from Minerul Motru and, as the successor to Pavel Buburuz , to train the second division team, which has since become the satellite team of Pandurii Târgu Jiu . On April 18, 2006, Lung dissolved his contract after disappointing results in the second half of the season.

On April 24, 2006 Lung took over the post of goalkeeping coach from Gabriel Boldici at Universitatea Craiova. From July 2006 he accompanied Anghel Iordănescu as a goalkeeping coach at Al Ain Club in the United Arab Emirates . After his release in November 2006, Lung also returned to Romania and on January 10, 2007, he became goalkeeping coach under Sorin Cârțu at the relegation-threatened first division club FC Național Bucharest . In the summer of 2007, Lung tried unsuccessfully to move abroad again. After most of the teams had already hired coaches at the beginning of the season and his father died in autumn 2007, Lung was suspended for half a year. On February 5, 2008 Lung was assistant coach of Ștefan Stoica at Gloria Buzau . After Stoica was released in August 2008, Lung dissolved his contract with Gloria in late September 2008 and signed a contract as goalkeeping coach at Pandurii Târgu Jiu on October 1, 2008 , after he had been requested by his head coach Sorin Cârțu. This engagement ended in October 2009 and then Lung took over the post of goalkeeping coach at Astra Ploieşti until the end of the year . From mid-March 2010 to mid-May 2010 Lung was again the goalkeeping coach under Sorin Cârțu at Pandurii Târgu Jiu. In the summer of 2010 he returned to Universitatea Craiova for two months as a goalkeeping coach under Aurel Țicleanu . On September 12, 2010 he followed Sorin Cârțu as goalkeeping coach for the Romanian champions CFR Cluj . When Cârțu was released on November 25, 2010, CFR also dissolved the contracts with his coaching staff, which consisted of Silviu Lung and Mircea Irimescu . In January 2011 Lung was again goalkeeping coach under Nicolò Napoli at Universitatea Craiova, where he replaced Gabriel Boldici. On July 8, 2011, he was replaced by his son Tiberiu Lung at Universitatea. In August 2011 he returned to Astra Ploieşti as the goalkeeping coach of Marius Șumudică . At the beginning of December 2011 Lung announced his departure at the end of the year after a dispute with the club's patron, but Astra stayed with him after the new head coach Toni on January 6, 2012 and Mircea Rednic on March 29, 2012. When Rednic was dismissed at the end of May 2012, Lung's employment with Astra also ended. In early October he was goalkeeping coach of CSU Craiova in the League II. In the summer of 2016, he left together with his boss Email Săndoi Craiova and switched to league rival CS Concordia Chiajna . Both were released there at the end of October 2016.
