He went through all the youth teams before he came into the first team and in the highest Romanian Football League, making his debut on June 13, 1987 Divizia A , gave. Since Steaua was one of the best teams in Europe at the time, Dumitrescu was loaned to FC Olt Scorniceşti in the 1987/88 season to collect match practice. There he was used regularly, but did not play in his favorite position in the attack, but as a full-back.

In 1988 Dumitrescu returned to Steaua and became a regular player, so that at the age of 19 he already played on the side of Romanian top starts such as Marius Lăcătuș and Gheorghe Hagi . With Steaua he was three times Romanian champion and twice cup winner and reached the final in the European Cup , in which he could not be used due to a yellow card suspension . Unlike other Romanian national players, Dumitrescu did not move abroad in 1990, but remained loyal to Steaua. Only after the World Cup in 1994 did the interest of foreign top clubs grow and Dumitrescu moved to Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League .

His commitment abroad was not a good star from the start, because Dumitrescu was never able to build on his achievements and successes at Steaua. He was embroiled in a scandal in England and was loaned to Sevilla FC that winter . Although Dumitrescu would have liked to stay in Seville, the clubs could not agree on a move, so he had to return to Tottenham in 1995. In the winter of 1995/96 Dumitrescu moved to local rivals West Ham United , where coach Harry Redknapp wanted to lead him back to old strength. Dumitrescu got a problem with his work permit and the contract was terminated.

In 1996 Dumitrescu moved to Mexico and joined Club America , and a year later he moved to Atlante . After returning to Steaua Bucharest in 1998, he retired at the end of 1998 at the age of 29.

National team

Dumitrescu played a total of 62 games for the Romanian national soccer team and scored 20 goals. His first international match was against Greece on April 26, 1989 . The following year, national coach Emerich Jenei nominated him for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where Dumitrescu was used twice. His participation in the 1994 World Cup in the USA was more successful . He played all five games and drew attention to himself with his two goals against Argentina . He was also nominated for the 1998 World Cup in France, but was only used once. After the World Cup, he resigned from the national team.

Career as a player agent

After the end of his active career, Dumitrescu founded the Sport & Business World agency to work as a player's agent . However, this company did not run as expected, so that he gave up again after a short time.

After the season he moved to FC Brașov , but moved to Alki Larnaka after a few games in the first Cypriot league . After a good start, the team kept falling back and ended the season only in 11th place out of 14 clubs. Dumitrescu returned to Romania and took over the Romanian U21 national team . After losing to Norway on October 11, 2002, he resigned and was replaced by the team consisting of Gheorghe Mihali and Florin Tene . From October 2002 to the end of the 2002/03 season he coached FCM Bacau . In 2003, Dumitrescu moved to Cyprus again, where he was coach of Apollon Limassol . As with Alki Larnaka, his team got off to a very good start and won 12 of 13 games. Dumitrescu was then voted coach of the year. Despite a few defeats, he received an offer from AEK Athens in February 2004 and moved to the Greek Super League to improve personally. After his resignation in 2004, Dumitrescu stayed in Greece to coach Egaleo AO Athens , Akratitos Ano Liosia and Kallithea FC . In February 2006 he got the next chance to coach a top club and moved to PAOK Thessaloniki . Here he resigned in October 2006, as the catenaccio he practiced was increasingly criticized by fans. He then interrupted his coaching career for almost three years. He devoted himself to his real estate company and in 2008 opened an art gallery on Bucharest's Lipscani Street.

On May 15, 2009 Dumitrescu replaced the Belgian Emilio Ferrera as coach of the Greek first division club Panthrakikos . After the 1: 2 home defeat on August 23, 2009 in the opening game of the 2009/10 season against Iraklis Thessaloniki , Dumitrescu was released on August 27, 2009 by the club's management.
