Daniel Timofte (born October 1, 1967 in Lonea , Hunedoara district ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . He played a total of 245 games in Divizia A , the Bundesliga and the Süper Lig . Timofte took part in the 1990 World Cup.

Career as a player

Daniel Timofte began his career with Jiul Petroșani . On August 31, 1986, he played his first game in Divizia A and immediately became a regular player. Even after relegation to Divizia B at the end of the season, he remained loyal to Jiul Petroșani. It was only in 1989, after he had been successful again, that Timofte switched to Dinamo Bucharest and gave his career another boost. The following season 1989/90 should be the most successful of his career. Timofte became a national player, Romanian champion and cup winner and reached the semi-finals in the European Cup Winners' Cup . After the World Cup , he did not move abroad, unlike most of the other national players, but stayed with Dinamo. But only until the winter break when he joined Bayer 05 Uerdingen . However, his engagement in Krefeld was not crowned with success. Timofte relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga with Bayer , but helped to bring about an immediate promotion , although he did not even play half of the games.

Then Timofte left Uerdingen and joined the Turkish club Samsunspor from the Süper Lig , where he met two former teammates with coach Gheorghe Mulțescu and striker Ovidiu Cornel Hanganu . Here he spent six years, but could not win any other titles. After losing his regular place, Timofte returned to Romania in 1999 and signed again with Dinamo Bucharest. After only six appearances, but winning the championship again, he ended his career in 2000 due to a knee injury.

National team

Timofte played a total of 22 games for the Romanian national soccer team , in which he scored twice. He made his debut on March 28, 1990 against Egypt . In the same year, national coach Emerich Jenei appointed him to the squad for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he was used in three of four games. He missed the decisive penalty in the round of 16 against Ireland . After that, Timofte was still part of the extended group of national players, but was not considered for the 1994 World Cup .

Career as a coach

After the end of his active career, Timofte returned to his homeland in Petroșani and opened a bar there called "Penalty", alluding to his missed penalty at the 1990 World Cup. Despite a valid player pass, he did not come to Jiul Petroșani because of his knee injury more and therefore took on the role of assistant coach at the club. In 2005 he was first assistant coach at FC Vaslui for one season and then in 2006 in the same role at Sportul Studențesc , where he was promoted to coach of the first team in the second half of the 2006/07 season. In 2007 he returned to FC Vaslui as assistant to Dorinel Munteanu . On September 11, 2008 Timofte took over the coaching position at Jiul Petroşani, which he resigned on November 7, 2009 after the home defeat against FC Argeş Piteşti . In January 2010, Timofte was coach of CF Brăila in League III and at the end of the season managed to move up to League II . After five game days in which only one point could be won, Timofte was sacked and replaced on September 30, 2010 by Liviu Ciobotariu . Since this only came to a draw in five league games, Timofte was brought back to the bottom of the table in November 2010. At the end of the season, the sporting relegation to League III could not be prevented and the contract, which expired on June 30, 2011, was not extended, although CF Brăila was announced on July 8, 2011 as a successor for Unirea Urziceni in League II. In the summer of 2011, Timofte was assistant coach of Gheorghe Mulțescu at Sportul Studențesc, whom he replaced as head coach for two championship games on October 15, 2011 after his resignation. On November 4, 2011 Timofte was replaced in this position by Daniel Isăilă .

At the beginning of the 2013/14 season Timofte was assistant coach of Gheorghe Mulțescu at Dinamo Bucharest . After a bad start to the season, he and his boss were fired in September 2013. When Mulțescu took over Petrolul Ploieşti in September 2014 , he again resorted to the services of Timoftes. In January 2015, both contracts were terminated. Timofte was without a club for more than a year. In June 2016 he joined CS Universitatea Craiova - again as Mulțescu's assistant . The duo led the club to the semi-finals of the Romanian Cup and fifth place in League 1 , which meant qualifying for the Europa League . However, the contract was not extended. Since April 2018, both have been working in the same constellation for Astra Giurgiu .
