Petroșani ( Hungarian Petrozsény , German  Petroschen , formerly German Steinthal ) is a city in Romania ; it is in the Hunedoara district in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania . The place is the center of a mining area and is known as the "City of Coal", but also a university town.

Location and population

Petroșani had 45,195 inhabitants in 2002. 89.4 percent of the population were Romanians, 8.44 percent Hungarians , and 1.16 were Roma . The city is located in the Jiu Valley on the Jiul de Est River . The valley is surrounded by the Carpathian massifs Retezat Mountains (NNW), Șureanu Mountains (ONO), Vâlcan Mountains (S) and Parâng (OSO).

history

The name of the city is derived from Petros , he was probably a former resident of today's Petroșani. The place was founded in 1768, an evangelical congregation has been known since 1896. The well-known writer of fantastic literature Jules Verne described the area in his book " The Carpathian Castle ", which is set in a mountain village in the nearby mountains under the Retezat.

Attractions

The city has a theater and a mining museum. There is a popular ski area at Parâng. The Retezat Mountains on the other hand are the westernmost high mountains (2509 m) of the Romanian Carpathians and important parts of it are protected in Romania's oldest national park . Petroschen is an important gateway to this Retezat National Park , the south side of which is most directly accessible from there via the neighboring valley of Jiul de Vest, via the cities of Vulcan and Lupeni .

economy

Petroșani is a Romanian center of coal mining. 60 percent of the population works in the coal mines. In 1999, many of the mine workers protested at the so-called Mineriades against the government-ordered closure of a total of 140 mines in the Jiu Valley . The miners had been a tool of abuse by political groups and the Securitate secret service at least since the 1989 revolution , which led to the overthrow of the dictator Nicolae Ceauşescu .
