Călin Peter Netzer (born May 1, 1975 in Petroșani ) is a Romanian film director . His film Mother & Son was awarded the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2013 .

Life

Călin Peter Netzer was born in 1975 in the Romanian city of Petroșani. At the age of eight, he and his family moved to Germany. After finishing school, Netzer returned to his homeland and studied film directing from 1994 to 1999 at the University of Theater and Film Arts in Bucharest . After graduating, he initially concentrated on short films. In 2003 he finally made his feature film debut with Maria . At the Locarno Film Festival , the film was awarded the special prize of the jury and three other prizes.

His family drama Mother & Son (English-language festival title: Child's Pose ) received the Golden Bear at the 63rd Berlinale in 2013 . The film is about a self-loving mother from the Romanian upper class (played by Luminiţa Gheorghiu ) who fights for her prodigal son ( Bogdan Dumitrache ) who accidentally ran over a young boy in his car.

For the relationship drama Ana, mon amour , Netzer received another invitation in 2017 to compete at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival . The love of the students Ana and Toma is put to a severe test by the mental illness Anas.
