Munții Șureanu or the Șureanu Mountains , also called Munții Cugirului , ( German  Mühlbacher Gebirge ; Hungarian Kudzsiri-havasok ) is a mountain range of the Șureanu-Parâng-Lotrului mountain group in the central part of the Transylvanian Alps in Romania .

Located in the south of the Alba and Hunedoara districts, the Șureanu Mountains border in the north on the Mühlbacher Mountains in the historic under forest of the Transylvanian Basin , in the east on the Zibins Mountains ( Romanian Munții Cibin ), from which the Șureanu Mountains through the Sebeş ( Mühlbach ) - a left tributary of the Mureș ( Mieresch ) - is separated. In the south the Șureanu Mountains border on the Parâng Mountains and the Petroschener Depression , in the southwest on the Retezat Mountains ( Munții Retezat ) separated by the valley of the river Strei ( Strell ), which runs north at Simeria ( fish village ) in the Mureș flows.

The highest point of the Șureanu Mountains is the 2130  m high Vârfu lui Pătru peak ( ). Other elevations are the Șureanu summit ( 2059 m), the Cârpa summit ( 2012 m) and others

rivers and lakes

  • Some of the rivers in the mountains are the Strei with its source streams Pârâul Cald and Pârâul Rovinei , the Jiul de Est (Eastern Jiu) - a tributary of the Jiu -, between the Parâng and Șureanu mountains, the Orăştie (also called Râul Grădiştea ) , the Sibișel (a tributary of the Orăştie), the Cugir (a tributary of the Mieresch ), the Râul Mare (a tributary of the Cugir), the Luncani (a tributary of the Strei), etc. v. a.
  • In the Mühlbach Mountains there are the Tău ( ) and Oașa reservoirs , ( ), the latter being 1255 m above sea level, with the 91 meter high dam and a volume of approx. 136 million m³ of water, the larger. The Canciu Reservoir ( ) on the Râul Mare River and the Șureanu Lake ( ).

Places and traffic

Some of the places in the region are the town of Petroșani ( Petroschen ), the small towns of Cugir ( Kudschir ) and Petrila , the municipalities of Săsciori ( Schweis ), Șugag ( Schugag ), Baru ( large elephant ), Pui ( chicken village ), Orăştioara de Sus ( Ober-Brooserbach ), among others

In the east of the Șureanu Mountains, along the Mühlbach , the national road ( Drum național ) DN 67C - the so-called Transalpina -, part of the Romanian national road network. In the south, the national road Drum național 7A , in the southwest and in the west, the European route 79 and the Simeria – Petroşani railway line .
