The Simeria – Petroșani – Filiași railway is a main line in Romania . The 204 kilometer long railway line runs from the southwest of Transylvania to the historic region of Wallachia ( Romanian Țara Românească ).

Route

From the small town of Simeria ( German  fish village ) in the Hunedoara district - south of the Transylvanian Ore Mountains - in a southerly direction, in the valley of the Strei ( Strell ), the railway line runs over the Transylvanian Alps through the mining area near Petroşani ( Petroschen ), to the small town of Filiaşi in the Dolj district in the historical region of Little Wallachia ( Oltenia ).

After the small town of Petroșani, the railway line runs south along the Jiu through the Lainici Pass to Târgu Jiu . Then in an easterly and then again in a southerly direction in the valley of the Gilorts , the Romanian main line 202 ends in the small town of Filiași.

Other small towns along the railway line to the south are in the Hunedoara Călan district ; in the district of Gorj Bumbeşti-Jiu and Târgu Cărbuneşti .

This route is used by the Rail Cargo Group- operated container trains from Duisburg via Vienna , Budapest , Giurgiu , Ruse and Stara Zagora to Tekirdag , which are hauled by an ÖBB 1116 as far as the Turkish border station at Kapikule .
