Spain and Belgium, fourth in the 1986 World Cup, dominated Group E ahead of Uruguay and South Korea. Spain struggled with a goalless draw in their first game against the "Urus", but were then able to beat South Korea (3: 1) and the Belgians 2: 1 in a captivating match, which led to group victory. With their outstanding director Enzo Scifo, the Belgians clearly distanced South Korea (2: 0) and Uruguay (3: 1), but showed weaknesses in the final despite great skill. For the South Americans from Montevideo only the meager 1-0 win against the Asians remained as reparation, which was just enough for the former world champion to reach the last sixteen.
