This article covers the South Korean national soccer team at the 1994 soccer world cup in the United States . It was South Korea's fourth participation in the finals of a soccer world championship.

qualification

First, the South Koreans had to pass a first group stage. They had little trouble against Bahrain , Lebanon , Hong Kong and India and advanced to the final group stage. The games of the first half of the season were played in Beirut (Lebanon), the games of the second half of the season in Seoul (South Korea).

In the second group stage, the South Koreans competed against the five other group winners. All games took place in Doha (Qatar). Opponents were Japan , Iran , Iraq , Saudi Arabia and North Korea . The team started weak and had only a minimal chance of qualifying after the defeat against Japan on the penultimate day. However, the Korean duel against North Korea was won 3-0, while Japan had to accept the equalizer against Iraq in the 92nd minute and were eliminated. The South Koreans still call the qualification of their team the miracle of Doha .

Games

South Korea were drawn in Group C defending champions Germany , Spain and Bolivia . In their first game against Spain the Asians were 2-0 down until the 85th minute, but drew with goals from Hong Myung-bo in the 85th and Seo Wung-jon in the 90th minute. Against Bolivia they won another point in the 0-0 draw. In the first meeting between Germany and South Korea, the defending champion led at halftime through Jürgen Klinsmann ( 12th / 37th ) and Karlheinz Riedle (20th) 3-0, after the break, Hwang Seon-hong (51st) and Hong Myung- bo (63.) South Korea approached 2: 3, but the Germans were able to defend this narrow lead. Due to this defeat, the South Koreans were eliminated in the preliminary round, but achieved their best result to date.
