The Gwangju Sangmu FC was a military club from Gwangju , South Korea . The club existed from 2003 to 2010 and played in the K League , the top division of South Korea.

history

prehistory

After the soccer World Cup in South Korea in 2002 , the World Cup stadiums were left without subsequent users. So that the association should not be responsible for the costs alone, the KFA called on the football clubs to move to the World Cup stadiums. However, since there was no club for the city of Gwangju and the stadium stood there without subsequent users, it was decided to establish a new club in Gwangju. On April 13, 2002, the South Korean Army announced that it would found an association in Gwangju. To this end, the city of Gwangju and the South Korean Army signed a contract until 2008, in which the association will remain in Gwangju until 2008. The official name of the club was Gwangju Sangmu Bulsajo FC, which means something like Gwangju Sangmu Phoenix FC.

First years

In their first season in 2003 they only reached 10th place ahead of Daegu FC and Bucheon SK . The first cup season went without any major events. In their first round they won against Yongin University 9-1 and thus made it to the round of 16 without much difficulty. But there they failed to Chunnam Dragons with 0: 2 and thus retired from the cup after a short time.

The following season went better. In the league they finished 8th with 29 points at the end of the season. The cup season was also better than the last cup season. In the first round they won 9-0 against Yongin City FC. In the round of 16 they managed a respectable win against FC Seoul . At home, the team won 3-2 and reached the quarter-finals. In the quarterfinals, however, the club had to admit defeat against Bucheon SK with 0: 2.

Persistent failure and dissatisfaction in Gwangju City

In 2005 the season turned into a disaster. In the league they finished last with only 17 points at the end of the season. The cup season had not gone well either. Although they won 6-1 against Konkuk University in the first round, the second round was over. On penalties, the club lost to Pohang Steelers 3-4 . 2006 didn't get any better. In the league they finished last with 23 points. The cup season was just as bad as the year before. In the first round they won against Dongguk University 1-0, but they had to say goodbye to the second division Goyang KB Kookmin Bank FC on penalties with 1: 4 from the cup. 2007 didn't look any better either. The club finished last for the third time in a row at the end of the season. In the cup it was the same as in previous years. In the first round they won 2-1 against Incheon University , but in the second round the club had to admit defeat to Ulsan Hyundai Horangi with 1: 3.

For the 2008 season, the army wanted to extend the contract. However, since the association lost more and more interest in the city due to the lack of success and the city had been preoccupied with founding its own association for some time, the discussions lasted a very long time. The talks ended in a compromise. The club was first renamed Gwangju Sangmu FC. It was also decided that as long as the city itself does not found a new club, the club in Gwangju may continue to play its games. The contract was extended indefinitely, with the option that as soon as the city of Gwangju found a new association, the military association would have to leave the city. After the contract was signed, the club could focus on the season again.

Still, things didn't go well for the club. for the fourth time in a row the club was last. In the cup it went better than usual. In the first round, the club won against Yesan FC 3-0 and made it to the round of 16. In the round of 16 they won the game against Suwon Samsung Bluewings on penalties and thus made it back to the quarter-finals for the first time in years. In the quarterfinals, however, the club failed to Gyeongnam FC with 0: 1 and was eliminated.

Last years and farewell to the city

In 2009 the season went better for the first time. The club played for the championship games up to the 17th matchday, but the second half of the season went very badly. At the end of the season, the club had to be content with 11th place. In the cup it was not very eventful. In the first round, the club won 5-0 when they met Yesan FC again and thus made it to the round of 16. But there they failed to Jeju United on penalties with 3: 4.

At the beginning of 2010, the city of Gwangju announced that it would allow its own club to compete in the K-League in 2011. It was clear that 2010 was Gwangju Sangmu FC's last season in Gwangju. In terms of sport, her last season was very bad. At the end of the season, the club was penultimate and shared the same number of points with Daegu FC. In their last cup season, things went well again. In the first round they won against Ulsan Hyundai Mipo Dolphin FC 3-0 and thus advanced to the next round. In the last sixteen they met the Pohang Steelers. They won the game 2-1 after extra time. In the quarterfinals, however, they failed again at the Chunnam Dragons. They lost the game 1: 2.

After the end of their last season in Gwangju, the club was dissolved. The military established a new military association in Sangju , the Sangju Sangmu FC . The city of Gwangju started its own club in the K League in 2011 with Gwangju FC .
