Hwang Sun-hong (born July 14, 1968 ) is a retired South Korean soccer player .

Career

In Germany, Hwang Sun-hong first played for the amateur team from Bayer 04 Leverkusen , for which he scored a total of 16 goals this season in the Oberliga Nordrhein 1991/92 . He began his professional career in 1992 with Wuppertaler SV , who were promoted to the second division , for whom he was only able to play 9 games due to a torn cruciate ligament . In 1993 he moved to the Pohang Steelers in the South Korean league, for which he was able to score 31 goals in 64 games. In 1998 he went to Japan in the J-League with Cerezo Osaka , where he was the Japanese top scorer in 1999 with 24 goals.

Between 1988 and 2002 he played 103 games for the South Korean national soccer team , in which he scored 50 times. Hwang participated in four world championships between 1990 and 2002. At the 1994 World Cup, he scored 1: 3 in the group game against Germany (final score: 2: 3). At the 1998 World Cup, he was unable to play a single game due to an injury. At the 2002 World Cup in his own country, Hwang scored 1-0 in the group game against Poland (final score: 2-0). The fourth place in this tournament with the South Korean national team is his greatest sporting success.

Hwang took 27th place in the Asia's Footballer of the Century election.
