The J.League Division 1 2003 was the eleventh season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the fifth under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was played in two half-series and began on March 21, 2003. After the end of the second half-series on November 29, 2003, two games between the two half-series winners for the Japanese championship were originally planned. As in the previous year, these games were not played after Yokohama F. Marinos managed to win both series. For the clubs from the port city, it was the second J.League championship after 1995 , back then as Marinos .
Relegated to the J.League Division 2 in 2004 were Vegalta Sendai and Kyōto Purple Sanga .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships. For the first time since the founding of the J.League, all games definitely ended after 90 minutes, the extension with golden goal , which was previously common in the event of a tie , was removed from the regulations.
There were three points for a win; in the case of a draw, each team received one point. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champions for the 2004 AFC Champions League . To determine the two relegated teams, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, the two worst teams had to go into the second division.
Attendees
A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. No longer there were the bottom of the previous season, Consadole Sapporo and the penultimate Sanfrecce Hiroshima , both of whom had to relegate to the J.League Division 2 in 2003 . J.League founding member Sanfrecce ended a ten-year membership in Division 1 with relegation, while Consadole completed his second episode in the J.League House of Lords after two years.
The two relegated teams were replaced by Ōita Trinita , the 2002 division champion , and the runner-up Cerezo Osaka . Ōita played for the first time in its history in the top Japanese league and was after Avispa Fukuoka only the second J.League club ever from Japan's southern main island Kyūshū . Cerezo, on the other hand, managed to return immediately after being relegated from the House of Lords in 2001.

Suntory Championship
As in the previous year, the finals were canceled. The reason for this was the fact that both half series were won by Yokohama F. Marinos, which automatically led to the championship title according to the competition regulations. For F. Marinos it was the second J.League title after 1995, at that time still under the name Marinos .
