The J.League Division 1 2008 was the sixteenth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the tenth under the name Division 1 . Eighteen clubs took part in it. The season started on March 8th and ended on December 6th, 2008; no games were played between May 18 and June 25.
The championship was won again by Kashima Antlers , for the team from East Kanto it was the sixth Japanese championship. In addition, for the first time not only the champions but the best three teams of the season qualified for the AFC Champions League ; for the 2009 season placed next to Kashima the second Kawasaki Frontale and the third Nagoya Grampus . Direct relegated to Division 2 2009 were the previous year's climbers Tokyo Verdy and Consadole Sapporo . In the relegation , which was for the time being the last time , Júbilo Iwata was able to maintain his place in Division 1 against Vegalta Sendai , third in the J.League Division 2 in 2008 .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice in a double round tournament , once at home and once away. There were three points for a win; in the case of a draw, each team received one point. The final table was therefore created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
The club with the best result at the end of the season won the Japanese championship. The best three teams qualified for the AFC Champions League 2008 . The two worst teams relegated directly to the J.League Division 2 2009 , the third from bottom had to play against the third-best team in Division 2 in two relegation games for a place in Division 1 for the coming season. In the event of a tie after the end of these two games, the away goals rule was applied; should this not result in a decision either, extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot- out was carried out.
Attendees
A total of eighteen teams took part in the season. For the third time in a row, three teams left the division for Division 2 at the end of the preseason; Yokohama FC, who had been promoted from last year, was already relegated five game days before the end and ended the season behind in the last place in the table. Also Ventforet Kofu could not hold the class and performed as a second last after two years to return to Division 2 at.
Sanfrecce Hiroshima only reached sixteenth place in the table, so the team had to compete in the relegation against last year's relegated Kyōto Sanga . After a 2-1 defeat in the first leg in Kyoto, a 0-0 second leg in front of their own audience was ultimately too little for Sanfrecce, who were relegated for the second time after four years of membership in Division 1. Conversely, Kyoto celebrated the direct return to the House of Lords after relegation from the highest Japanese football league in 2006.
As further climbers from Division 2 2007 , their master Consadole Sapporo and the runner-up Tokyo Verdy 1969 completed the field of participants. Both teams returned to Division 1 after long absences of six and four years respectively.
In addition, two teams renamed themselves. Nagoya Grampus deleted the addition "Eight" from the name at the beginning of the season, as did the newcomer Tokyo Verdy the founding year "1969".
