Kim Nam-il (born March 14, 1977 in Incheon , South Korea ) is a South Korean football player .

Career

Kim Nam-il started playing soccer as a student. Initially active in attacking midfield, he was instructed to play a more defensive style under Guus Hiddink . He then celebrated his breakthrough in the national team at the 2002 World Cup and became a symbol of the successful team. Previously relatively unknown, many companies tried to use its popularity for advertising campaigns and Kim was able to conclude lucrative advertising contracts.

Following the tournament, Kim switched to Excelsior Rotterdam on loan , as he hoped, like his compatriot Song Chong-gug , to play at Feyenoord Rotterdam . However, he did not know how to convince sustainably and returned to his home club Chunnam Dragons .

In 2004, Kim switched to Suwon Samsung Bluewings in exchange for Ko Jong-soo , with whom he became Korean champions in 2004 and 2008. A foot injury at the end of 2005 threatened his involvement in the 2006 World Cup , but he recovered in time and was able to take part in the tournament. He played all three games for his country at the tournament and announced after the tournament that he had buried his hopes of being able to play in Europe and that he wanted to play in the K-League forever . In August 2006, Kim was named the new captain of the national team and remained captain until the 2007 Asian Cup, which he missed because of a hernia .

In January 2008, Kim moved to Vissel Kobe in Japan . After two years in Kobe, he moved to Russia in January 2010 , where he moved to Tom Tomsk .

At the beginning of the qualifying games for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Kim returned to the national team and was back as captain in all six games of the third round. At the beginning of the fourth round in September 2008 he was suspended after a foul on Hong Yong-jo in the game against North Korea and returned to the national team in November 2009 before the friendlies against Denmark and Serbia.
