Hong Yong-jo (born May 22, 1982 in Pyongyang ) is a North Korean football player .
Club career
Until 2007, Hong appeared internationally as a player in the April 25 Sports Group , the club of the Korean People's Army . In early 2008 he was allowed to leave the country as one of the few players born in North Korea and played the first half of 2008 for the Serbian capital club FK Bežanija , for which he came to seven appearances in the first division relegation . In the summer he moved to the Russian second division club FK Rostow , with whom he achieved promotion to the Premjer league at the end of the season . After the 2010 season, his expiring contract in Russia was not renewed. He returned to his hometown club Sports Group April 25 in the summer of 2011.
National team
Hong has been part of the North Korean national team since 2002. He was used in qualifying for the 2004 Asian Cup and was in the finals of the King's Cup in Thailand in 2003 and 2005 . In 2005 and 2007 he took part in the qualifying rounds for the East Asian Championship, but was not considered for the respective final round.
After making eight appearances in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , Hong was also one of the team's top performers in the successful qualification for the 2010 World Cup . Together with director Ahn Young-hak and Mun In-guk , he was responsible for the lightning-fast counter-attacks and the support of the only striker Jong Tae-se and, with four goals in 14 appearances in the qualifying rounds, played a decisive role in the first qualification for the World Cup since 1966. He is also the captain of the national team.
