Song Chong-gug (born February 20, 1979 in Busan ) is a former South Korean soccer player .

Song is one of the stars of South Korean football. He started at Busan I'Park in the K-League when he was 22. He had previously been active in South Korean national teams , at the 1999 Junior World Championships, the 2000 Olympics and the 2001 Confederations Cup. His big breakthrough came at the 2002 home World Cup . In 4th place for the South Koreans, he was an important player in all seven games and scored one goal, although he plays more in defense or defensive midfield.

His convincing World Cup performance helped him to get a foreign engagement in the Netherlands at the top club Feyenoord Rotterdam . There he spent two and a half successful years and despite major injury breaks made 53 appearances in the Eredivisie as well as 5 Champions League and 6 UEFA Cup games. The injuries and differences of opinion with the new coach ended his time abroad and he returned early to the K-League for the Suwon Bluewings . There he was able to win his first title with the championship in 2008 . In 2010 he moved to al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia. After two more six-month positions at Ulsan Hyundai and Tianjin Teda , he ended his career at the end of 2011.

However, Song Chong-Gug put a protracted ankle injury there for a long time out of action and did not return until the beginning of 2006. That's why his preparation time for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was too short and so he was only used once in South Korea's World Cup squad .

Song is one of the most popular athletes in his home country. His wedding was even broadcast live on Korean television in 2003.
