Robert Cullen ( Japanese カ レ ン ・ ロ バ ー ト , Karen Robāto ; born June 7, 1985 in Tsuchiura ) is a Japanese football player .

Career

Cullen grew up as the son of a Japanese mother and a British father from Northern Ireland. In his youth, he first played in the team of the municipal high school Funabashi and then spent two years with Kashiwa Reysol , before moving to Júbilo Iwata in the J. League in 2004 . Here the 1.80 meter tall striker , who also likes to act as an attacking wing in midfield, made his professional debut on March 5, 2004 in a match against Ōita Trinita . In his second season in 2005, he scored 13 goals in 31 games and was named the best young player in the J. League ( Rookie of the Year ); he could not build on this achievement in the following years. For the 2010 season he moved to the second division Roasso Kumamoto .

At the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011, Cullen was twice for trial training in the Netherlands at VVV-Venlo. After the second test, he signed a two and a half year contract with the honorary division in January 2011, where his compatriot Maya Yoshida already played. He was used in 15 games in the second half of the season and scored two goals; with two goals in the four relegation games , he contributed to the relegation of Venlo.

National team

Cullen already played in the Japanese U-19 national team. In 2004 he took part with her at the Toulon tournament and the Junior Asian Football Championship. In 2005 he traveled with the U-20 national team to the 2005 Junior World Cup in the Netherlands; he was used in all four games of the Japanese, including against the hosts. He couldn't score a goal.

In the Olympic selection of Japan, he was used in the qualification for the Olympic football tournament in 2008 , but was not in the squad for the games in Beijing.
