Maya Yoshida ( Japanese 吉田 麻 也 , Yoshida Maya ; born August 24, 1988 in Nagasaki Prefecture ) is a Japanese football player . He holds the position of central defender . In 2011 he won the Asian Cup with the Japanese national team .

Club career

Yoshida went through the youth department of the Japanese first division club Nagoya Grampus . In December 2009 he ventured to Europe and moved to VVV-Venlo in the Netherlands .

On August 30, 2012, he signed a three-year contract with Premier League participants Southampton FC . He made his debut for the Saints on September 15, 2012 when he came on for Jos Hooiveld in the game against Arsenal in the 28th minute . In January 2015 he extended his contract to 2018.

National team

In 2008 and 2012 as captain, Yoshida was in the squad for the Olympic Games and was used in a total of seven games. In the game for third place, the team lost 2-0 to South Korea in 2012 .

For the Japanese national team , he played his first international matches from 2010.
